On May 13, 2010, the DOL announced a new e-signature option that will allow service providers to file Form 5500 on behalf of their clients.  The option will negate the requirement for plan administrators (at the plan sponsor) to obtain filing credentials with the DOL. While the alternative comes with several stipulations, it may provide an attractive filing alternative for service providers and plan administrators as they transition to the fully electronic filing system.
